Here's the deal. We know that you want to use products with better ingredients, but you don't know where to start. After all, you have more important things to do than decode the labels on the back of your grooming gear. You work hard, play hard, and researching sodium laurel sulfates just isn't making it high on your priority list.

So here's our promise to you: We will always use the most premium, ridiculously good-for-you ingredients on the planet. Period. No need for you to get a PhD in chemistry to read our labels and understand them.

Here's a quick crash course on the properties we look for when crafting up our potions:

Antioxidants

Protect your skin by reducing and counteracting "free radical production." Free radicals can attack your skin, damaging your skin cells. Antioxidants also reduce pigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines. Antioxidants can be found in Green Tea Leaf Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Watermelon Fruit Extract and Witch Hazel.

Emollient

Soften and smooth the scales of the skin, which help reduce rough, flaky skin. They are also occlusive agents: substances that provide a layer of protection that helps prevent moisture (water) loss from the skin. These are some great Emollients we've included: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cocoa Butter and Sunflower Seed Oil.

Emulsifier

Since water and oil do not mix but stay separated, an additional agent (like an emulsifier) is necessary to form a homogenous mixture keeping water and oil together. Here are some natural ones we chose: Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate.

Humectant

Substances that absorb water from the air of underlying layers of the skin and draw those molecules toward the surface of your skin. This allows the skin to retain moisture and can help other topical skincare ingredients perform better. Some natural humectants include Aloe Vera, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate and Sorbitol.

Hydrating Agent

Drinking lots of water is great, but that's not all it takes to maintain hydration levels within your skin cells. Skin cells that are well hydrated swell to be plump, bouncy and reflect light effectively. Hydrating agents are named after their functionality. Here are a few: Aloe Vera, Coconut Acid, Panthenol and Squalene.

Moisturizing Agent

On the other hand, moisturizers are the tools that can seal up leaks, preventing your skin from losing water in the first place. Moisturizing effectively seals in moisture and builds the skin’s protective barrier. This prevents water loss and ultimately keeps the skin soft and smooth. Some of the great moisturizing ingredients include Glyceryl Glucoside and Sugarcane Extract.

Skin Conditioner

Softens, hydrates and nourishes skin at a deeper level than just the surface of your skin. Some skin conditioners re-energize your skin cells making your skin instantly look more awake. Some boost blood circulation to prevent wrinkles and reduce lines. A few of our favorites are Darutoside, Shea Butter and Taurine.

Benzalkonium chloride: A disinfectant used as a preservative and surfactant associated with severe skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and allergies. Found in: moisturizers, lotions. 

BHA and BHT:  BHTs are synthetic antioxidants used to extend shelf life. They are likely carcinogens and hormone disruptors and may cause liver damage. Found in: non-lathering shaving creams.

1,4-DIOXANE: A by-product of manufacturing that is a probable human carcinogen (a known animal carcinogen) as well as toxic to organs and the respiratory system, and a skin irritant. Likely to be present where ethoxylated ingredients like sodium laureth sulfate, PEGs, and ceteareth are listed on ingredient labels. Found in: shampoo, body wash.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA): A chelating (binding) agent added to cosmetics to improve stability. May be toxic to organs. Found in: moisturizers, lotions.
 
Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA): Surfactants and pH adjuster linked to allergies, skin toxicity, hormone disruption, and inhibited fetal brain development. Found in: Shaving Cream, Shaving Gel, Aftershave.
 
Formaldehyde: Used as a preservative in cosmetics. A known carcinogen that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Present where quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol), and several other preservatives are listed. Found in: shampoo, body wash.

Isobutane:  A propellent similar to butane that dehydrates the skin, extracting the water from it.  These chemicals should be avoided by those with sensitive skin, as they can ultimately lead to skin irritation. Found in: Shaving Gels.

Isopentane:  A propellent similar to butane that dehydrates the skin, extracting the water from it.  These chemicals should be avoided by those with sensitive skin, as they can ultimately lead to skin irritation. Found in: Shaving Gels.

Mineral Oil: Also listed as liquid paraffin, liquid petrolatum and paraffin oil; a by-product of petroleum distillation that may cause contact dermatitis. Found in: baby lotions, cold creams, ointments. Found in: aftershave lotions.

Methylisothiazolinone: Chemical preservatives that are among the most common irritants, sensitizers, and causes of contact skin allergies. Found in: shampoo, conditioner, body wash.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone: Chemical preservatives that are among the most common irritants, sensitizers, and causes of contact skin allergies. Found in: shampoo, conditioner, body wash.

Methylparaben, Ethylparaben Propylparaben: A preservative commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. Parabens are endocrine (or hormone) disruptors, which may alter important hormone mechanisms in our bodies. Found in: shaving cream, shampoo, face cleanser, body wash, body lotion.
 
Phthalates  (DBP, DEHP, DEP and others): A class of plasticizing chemicals used to make products more pliable or to make fragrances stick to skin. Phthalates disrupt the endocrine system and may cause birth defects. Found in: synthetic fragrance, plastic materials.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG compounds): PEGs are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. Depending on manufacturing processes, PEGs may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are both carcinogens. Found in: shaving creams, shampoo.
 
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS and SLES): SLS and SLES are surfactants that can cause skin irritation or trigger allergies. SLES is often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a byproduct of a petrochemical process called ethoxylation, which is used to process other chemicals in order to make them less harsh. Found in: shaving cream, shampoo, body wash, bubble bath.
   
Triclosan and Triclocarban: Antimicrobial pesticides toxic to the aquatic environment; may also impact human reproductive systems. Found in: liquid soap, soap bars.
